Tunde is a Senior Partner and Head of the Litigation & Arbitration Practice. He is a barrister and solicitor of the Supreme Court of Nigeria (admitted 1988). In December 2008, he was conferred with the rank of Senior Advocate of Nigeria (SAN) by the Nigerian Legal Practitioners Privileges Committee.

Tunde has represented various multinational clients including oil companies, telecommunication companies and banks both in litigation, ad-hoc arbitrations and arbitration proceedings. He renders legal advice on a wide range of commercial transactions. He also regularly represents Nigerian as well as foreign and multinational clients in arbitration and before arbitral institutions, such as the International Court of Arbitration of the ICC. He has also been appointed arbitrator in several arbitration proceedings.

In 2018, the Legal 500 Europe, Middle East & Africa recognized him as one of the leading individuals in Dispute Resolution. In Chambers Global 2014 and 2016, he was described as an “extremely skilled advocate…very hands-on, very clever, and with excellent commercial judgement. In Chambers Global 2013 legal rankings he was described as “hard-working and thorough” and respected by peers for his litigation skills. Tunde’s expertise has also been recognised in publications such as Who’s Who Legal Nigeria 2010 and 2012. Where he was described as a “fantastic litigator” and, in 2012, he was noted for his “craftsmanship” in constructing legal arguments when representing international entities in arbitration proceedings. Dr Kgosientsho Ramokgopa is currently Head of the Investment and Infrastructure office in the office of the President of the Republic of South Africa and the Head of Infrastructure South Africa. Prior to this, Dr Ramokgopa was Gauteng MEC (Member of Executive Committee) for Economic Development, Agriculture and Environment. Previously, he has held the position of Executive Mayor of the City of Tshwane between 2010 and 2016, at the time he was one of the youngest Mayors of a Metropolitan in the country.

Dr Ramokgopa’s previous positions include holding the position of CEO for both the Metropolitan Trading Company and the Johannesburg Market and he has previously been the Deputy Chairperson of the board of Trade and Investment in Limpopo. Dr Ramokgopa holds a PHD from the University of Pretoria, A Masters of Public Administration from the University of Pretoria and a Masters of Business Leadership from the University of South Africa. He completed his BSC Civil Engineering at the University of Durban Westville in 1998.

Dr Ramokgopa is an avid reader and enjoys following sports. He is actively involved in soccer development in his home township of Atteridgeville and once owned a team that played in the ABC Motsepe league. In his free time, Dr Ramokgopa offers lessons in leadership and public management at various tertiary institutions as a guest lecturer, something he does pro-bono.

James is a Partner focusing on major infrastructure, construction and engineering projects. He has over 19 years’ experience advising clients around the globe. James assists clients through his expertise in international arbitration (including under the LCIA, UNCITRAL, ICC, and SIAC rules), litigation and alternative dispute resolution, and is experienced at handling the most legally, factually, and technically complex disputes. James has particular expertise with complex civil and process engineering projects such as power plants and oil and gas related projects.

Although based in London, James brings with him a wealth of experience working with clients from differing regions, in particular those from Africa, the Middle East, Europe and Asia. James has previously been the head of the disputes practices in Doha and Seoul, as well as the head of the construction disputes practice in London and now as a global head of practice.

Gabriela is a construction and engineering law specialist, currently the Head of Legal & Contracting for the Infrastructure Delivery Division at the Development Bank of Southern Africa, where she joined in March 2020. Gabriela was previously a Director of Claims and Consultancy at HKA in South Africa. Gabriela gained invaluable experience in the construction and engineering field not only at HKA as a Director Consultant but principally having worked on both the Kusile and Medupi Power Stations as a Specialist Legal Advisor for Eskom, the Owner and Developer of both mega projects. As Gabriela was dedicated to these projects, she had the opportunity to be involved from “cradle to grave” in the procurement and negotiation of contracts as well as legal support in contract management, dispute avoidance and dispute resolution.

Besides managing the collective efforts of the construction experts, external lawyers, counsel and project management staff in the dispute environment, Gabriela has provided much in the way of sound strategic and commercial direction for the benefit of Eskom and other external clients. Her technical knowledge and practical approach assist greatly in finding solutions to complex legal issues that are ever present in construction disputes.

At the 2014 African Legal Awards, Gabriela was nominated in the category of ‘Legal Counsel of the Year’. The Eskom Legal Construction team, that Gabriela was part of, was also nominated for the ‘Legal Department of the Year’ Award.

Gabriela continues to grow her experience in this field by now leading a legal and contracts team which is integral to the grow of the DBSA as the implementing agent of choice by many of the municipalities, governmental departments, and State-Owned Enterprises in Southern Africa.

Ryan Koopman is a Civil Engineer with 25 years of construction industry experience. Ryan has worked in the UK for 13 years for two Tier 1 Contractors in Quantity Surveying and Commercial Management roles. He returned to South Africa in 2013 to work for Parson Brinckerhoff on the Medupi Power Plant as part of the FIDIC Engineers team on the mega project. Ryan returned to contracting in 2018 where he joined Grinaker-LTA and is General Manager of the Building Inland Business. Ryan has worked on some iconic projects such as the London 2012 Olympics and Crossrail in the UK, and the Medupi Power Station in South Africa. He has broad experience in several forms of construction contracts and has worked on a number of projects that were Joint Ventures.

Steven De Jong

Steven is counsel in the Projects, Energy and Infrastructure Group in Johannesburg. He principally advises lenders, sponsors and project companies on the financing and project development in the power (including renewables), infrastructure and oil and gas sectors. He has considerable experience of advising clients on projects throughout Africa and Europe. Steve holds Master’s Degrees from the National University of Singapore and New York University, where he studied as a Dean’s Scholar, and has broad international experience in the projects sector, having previously worked in Sydney, New York, Tokyo and Paris. Steve is bilingual in English and French.

Gillian Niven​

Gillian is a counsel in the Global PENRI group and based in our Johannesburg office.  She is a regulatory lawyer specializing in environmental law and has a wide-ranging environmental regulatory experience in investigating, assessing and advising clients predominantly in the energy, mining, oil and gas petroleum, nuclear and industrial sectors.  She has advised extensively on environmental compliance related matters and has also fulfilled the role of legal counsel at a JSE listed gas company, where she was responsible for overseeing all legal related matters including engaging with regulators reviewing, negotiating and drafting all commercial documents required for the business. 

Gillian has also provided regulatory advice in relation to climate change related matters including carbon capture and storage, carbon tax and climate change risk and mitigation policies.  She has experience in public law and regulatory as well as sustainability law.

Shingira Masanzu​

Shingira Masanzu is a PhD researcher at the London School of Economics and Political Science. Her research examines deal-making by African governments in the context of infrastructure investment, and how human rights (and particularly economic and social rights) frameworks might be used to re-shape approaches to infrastructure deal-making. Shingi has worked as a senior legal counsel for a multilateral development bank, advising on sovereign lending and guarantee operations in sectors ranging from energy and infrastructure to education, health and governance, with experience in Africa, the Middle East and Asia.

Prior to this, she was an associate at a New York law firm, focusing on mergers and acquisitions and capital markets. Shingi holds an LLB (magna cum laude) and Post-Graduate Diploma (Public Law) from the University of Cape Town, and an LLM (International Legal Studies) from New York University School of Law, where she was a Hauser Global Scholar.

Prof Lwazi Ngubevana​

Lwazi is a chemical engineer, energy executive and academic with extensive global experience in renewable energy, energy investments, advisory, environment, and water desalination industries. He is registered as a Professional Engineer (Pr.Eng.), with the Engineering Council of South Africa (ECSA) and as a Chartered Engineer (CEng) with the Institution of Chemical Engineers (IChemE), UK. He holds a PhD in Chemical Engineering and an MBA from the University of the Witwatersrand, Johannesburg, where he is now the Director of the African Energy Centre at Wits Business School. 

Lwazi has extensive Process Design, Business Development, Process Re-engineering, Project Development and Project Management experience. He is skilled in Project Finance, Business case development and research valorisation. He also has solid experience in policy and legislation, having worked with various government entities on Renewable Energy, Water and Environmental Policy development and implementation.

As a partner in the International Arbitration team in London, Tom advises clients on contentious issues arising out of their operations across the world. Tom has particular expertise in the resolution of disputes associated with complex engineering and infrastructure projects, and brings experience and knowledge of arbitration, mediation and court proceedings in the Commercial Court and the Technology and Construction Court.

Tom is experienced in advising clients in relation to projects based in Europe, Africa and Asia in the conventional and nuclear power, offshore wind, oil and gas, commercial space flight, defence, and transport industries. He has also acted in a number of commercial disputes in the pharmaceutical and telecommunications sectors. In 2015 Tom returned from a three-year overseas secondment to a major Japanese heavy industries company, during which he advised them on all aspects of their business.

Tom combines his disputes practice with advisory work, supporting businesses to identify and manage risk throughout the entire life cycle of their projects. He also provides training on legal issues in the construction and engineering sector, and is a regular speaker at conferences and events, including at the Overseas Contractors Association of Japan, Inc. (OCAJI) in Tokyo and the Turkish Contractors Association in Ankara. Tom’s pro bono practice includes representing claimants in a number of constitutional challenges in the Caribbean.

Tom has experience of conducting arbitrations under the ICC, LCIA, LMAA and UNCITRAL rules, and has acted in cases brought before the Commercial Court and the Technology  and Construction Court in London, the Courts of several European jurisdictions and before the High Court of St Vincent and the Grenadines.

Mushtaq Namdarkhan​

Mushtaq Namdarkhan is a Partner at BLC Robert within the Dispute Resolution department and is mainly involved in corporate/commercial litigations and arbitrations as well as insolvency and restructuring transactions. Mushtaq regularly appears before the Supreme Court of Mauritius in shareholder disputes, banking litigation and construction disputes among others. He appears before the Designated Judges under the International Arbitration Act in applications involving the International Arbitration Act and the Convention for the Recognition and Enforcement of Foreign Arbitral Awards Act. He is also involved in a number of high-value domestic and international commercial arbitrations.

Mushtaq has co-authored the BLC Robert publication “Why Mauritius? A National Court in Support of International Arbitration” in 2016 and has regularly contributed to the “Chambers Global Practice Guides” on Insolvency and Litigation. He also intervenes as a speaker at several international arbitration conferences, including the East Africa International Arbitration Conference.

Abimbola Akeredolu SAN

Abimbola Akeredolu, SAN is the Partner in charge of Litigation, Arbitration and Alternative Dispute Resolution at the leading Nigerian law firm of Banwo & Ighodalo. Prior to obtaining a degree in law, Abimbola obtained a first degree in French where she majored in French and took substantive courses in other European Languages. This background has been advantageous and most useful in enhancing her communication skills with courts, arbitral tribunals and clients from all over the world in the course of her practice. She is a Senior Advocate of Nigeria, A Notary Public for Nigeria and a Fellow of the Chartered Institute of Arbitrators (UK) and the Institute of Construction Industry Arbitrators. Emilio Linde-Arias is a Managing Engineer at Exponent where he provides technical advice for construction disputes. Dr Linde-Arias has over twenty years of international experience in construction engineering working for consultants and contractors on the management, planning, procurement, design and construction of large scale and complex infrastructure projects and underground structures.

Dr Linde-Arias is a Chartered Engineer and has an MSc in Construction Management and an extensive background in the supervision and construction of underground structures, including rail, road and hydro tunnels. He has acted as resident engineer, being responsible for the quality control and safe and correct implementation of the design.

As a delay consultant, his experience spans a broad range of industries including commercial property development, petrochemical, power generation, oil and gas, and transportation, where he has been involved in the preparation of expert reports on delay and disruption analysis for formal dispute proceedings.

An experienced arbitrator and counsel in international arbitration, he has a wide industry knowledge in construction, oil and gas and infrastructure, IT and digital. A dually qualified English Solicitor and Italian Advocate, he understands and navigates the different approaches across common law and civil law jurisdictions and is able to resolve effectively and pragmatically complex substantive and procedural problems. Aware of the multi-cultural dimension of many international disputes, he has worked across Europe, Africa, Asia and America as counsel, arbitrator (both as president of the tribunal and co-arbitrator) and expert witness. Daniel has considerable experience both sitting as an arbitrator as well as appearing before international arbitration tribunals in construction disputes. He is regularly appointed as arbitrator, inter alia, by the LCIA, AFSA and the Commercial Arbitration Centre and has conducted numerous arbitrations and adjudications as a party representative in construction disputes both in Europe and Africa. He was born and brought up in Budapest, Hungary; read law at Cambridge, followed by obtaining the BCL at Oxford. Luiz Aboim is a partner in the Litigation & Dispute Resolution practice of the London office. He is an experienced arbitration practitioner with deep connections to the Brazilian and Lusophone markets. He also has experience handling corporate and commercial disputes, particularly in the energy, resources and infrastructure sectors.

Luiz has nearly two decades of international arbitration experience. Having started his career in Brazil, Luiz has worked in London and Paris at two leading international law firms for the past 15 years. His practice focuses on Lusophone African and Latin American jurisdictions, such as Angola, Brazil and Mozambique, where he has advised on some of the largest disputes to date. Consistent with his regional focus, most of Luiz’s work is in the oil and gas, mining, power, telecoms and infrastructure sectors.

His recent experience includes a number of complex M&A disputes, FPSO construction and conversions, JOA and environment related disputes, many involving amounts in excess of US$1 billion dollars. She was formerly Senior Legal Counsel at the Permanent Court of Arbitration in The Hague where she administered inter-state, investor-state, and commercial arbitrations involving states or state-entities. Prior to joining the PCA, Sarah was a member of the Secretariat at the ICC International Court of Arbitration in Paris where she administered commercial arbitrations under the ICC Rules.

She was also a member of the international arbitration group at Shearman & Sterling LLP in Paris, prior to which she worked in private practice in Auckland.

Júlio César Bueno

Júlio César Bueno has been a partner at Pinheiro Neto Advogados since 2001. He has considerable national and international experience focusing on the practice of construction law and engineering contracts, project finance and public procurement.

He is the president of the Brazilian Society of Construction Law (SCL Brasil) and president elected of the Dispute Resolution Board Foundation (DRBF). He is also a vice co-chair of the International Construction Projects Committee (ICP) of the International Bar Association (IBA) and Fellow of the Chartered Institute of Arbitrators (FCIArb). He has a Ph.D from the University of São Paulo Law School and an LL.M from the University of Cambridge.

Júlio Bueno represents some of the world’s largest organisations (owners, multilateral agencies, financial institutions, contractors and developers) in their global infrastructure and construction projects located throughout Brazil and the rest of Latin America. He assists clients across the entire project spectrum; some recent examples include gas facilities, power plants (nuclear, coal-fired, gas-fired, combined cycle, hydro), wind farms, steel manufacturing facilities, copper-mining facilities, coal mining facilities and ports.

Lois Oni, currently works with Nigeria LNG Limited (NLNG), as the Lead Counsel Technology, Projects and Production, providing legal services to the Company’s plant site and projects.

A barrister and solicitor of the Supreme Court of Nigeria, she started her career as the legal counsel for Nasarawa State University, later moving to the oil and gas industry where she has worked for over 14 years; and garnered business experience in relation to commercial, shipping and marine operations for over 10 years, before moving into her current role.

As a legal services provider in NLNG, she has worked on major EPC projects including but not limited to the construction of the NLNG Corporate Head Office and the ongoing mega project – NLNG Train 7.

She has an MBA in Leadership & Sustainability, and her interests include organizational leadership,
corporate culture and personnel development.
